Barbara Gibson
Haldens Candidate 2017
(including Sherrards, Haldens and Panshanger)

Barbara GibsonWhen it comes to politics, I am an outsider. But I have become so fed-up with what I see as incompetence and indifference on the part of those who are supposed to be representing our interests that I decided it was time to step up. I believe our elected leaders should represent the interests of residents, not rubber-stamp initiatives handed down by a political party that considers this area a 'safe seat'. So I am standing as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Hertfordshire County Council representing Haldens Division.

What can I bring to the role? With more than 25 years of business experience, much of it working with global companies, I have a track record of getting things done. I have managed large teams and big budgets, and also worked with small businesses and non-profits on shoestring budgets with volunteer teams. A few years ago I headed back to University to earn my PhD, and I now work primarily as a University lecturer teaching international business communication.

I believe in transparency and accountability, and that local government should work harder to cut unnecessary spending and ensure critical services are delivered.

Our local roads have become more congested and full of dangerous potholes. Many of our neighbourhoods are overwhelmed with the number of cars parked on verges, pavements and every other available space, both legal and illegal. And yet neither the County nor Borough Councils have shown any leadership in addressing these problems. In fact, they've cut bus services forcing more people into more cars, and introduced unsound plans to add thousands of new homes without adequately addressing the infrastructure problems.

I believe in fairness, and am especially concerned with issues involving education, health care and mental health, and ensuring we are taking proper care of our aging population. I lost my own father to Alzheimers, and cared for my mother-in-law as she also faced its devastating effects, so I have first-hand knowledge of the shortage of support services.

I immigrated from the USA in 2002, and proudly became a British citizen in 2011. I've lived in the Welwyn Garden City area for more than 14 years. My husband, Andrew, is a native of St. Albans and a teacher. With two dogs, we spend much of our time outdoors, enjoying the many green spaces that make our area so special.

Welwyn Garden City has so much going for it, but there are so many important issues that need to be addressed, and I hope you will give me the opportunity to represent you and make a difference.

If there are any local issues that are of particular concern to you, please don't hesitate to contact me:
